The rapid development of AI inevitably creates economic urgency. Its direct source is the mismatch between the speed of technological substitution and the speed of social adaptation.
Technology iterates on a monthly basis. Education systems, vocational training, and social safety nets adjust on an annual basis at best. When a persons skills go from scarce to redundant within six months, but vocational training cannot keep up, the urgency is real.
For economies that rely on large-scale labour, this urgency is particularly acute. The competitive advantage built over the past decade or two, a large pool of workers with basic education, may be substantially eroded within the next three to five years. This is not speculation. It is the inevitable consequence of a cost structure shift. The marginal cost of using AI is approaching zero, while the marginal cost of labour keeps rising.
The direction of response is not to resist AI. It is to accelerate structural transformation. But structural transformation itself requires time, capital, and policy space. These are precisely what labour-intensive economies lack.
Another dimension worth noting is the escalation of ethical dilemmas. When work is no longer just a means of making a living but also a source of social identity and dignity, large-scale job replacement creates not just economic problems but deeper social issues. This goes beyond what economics alone can address.
Taken together, the urgency created by AI is a multi-dimensional problem. Technology, economy, education, and social structure. Every dimension needs a response, and none of them are easy to respond to.
